Twin Cities to celebrate World Refugee Day on June 20
Minneapolis, Minn. (June 13, 2008) – More than 88,500 refugees from around the world have made Minnesota their home since 1979, including the largest Somali community in the United States and one of the largest Hmong communities outside of Asia. On June 20, representatives from local refugee-serving organizations will host Twin Cities World Refugee Day 2008, a celebration of the many local refugee groups and their journeys to Minnesota.
The event will be June 20 at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis. It is free and open to the public. Cultural singers, dancers and other performers will take the stage between 2:00 and 6:00 p.m., when an immigrant resource fair with information from more than Twin Cities organizations will also be open.
The main program, beginning at 6:00 p.m., will feature West African spoken word artist IBé, a Hmong break dance performance and speakers representing local refugee groups. Live bands SUNplugd and International Reggae All-Stars will follow. Throughout the event, visitors will enjoy foods and handicrafts from around the world, an education area and many children’s activities. Free shuttles will be available from several sites in the metro area; visit www.tcworldrefugeeday.org for information.
More than 1,000 people attended the first large-scale Twin Cities World Refugee Day celebration in 2007 at the Brian Coyle Community Center.
About World Refugee Day
In 2000, as an expression of solidarity with Africa, the United Nations General Assembly established
June 20 as World Refugee Day to coincide with Africa Refugee Day. Since 2001, people all over the
world have celebrated World Refugee Day with events that honor the world’s nearly 10 million
refugees and raise awareness about their continued plight.
