| WHY |
In 2000, the United Nations General Assembly established June 20 as World Refugee Day. Since 2001, people around the world have celebrated the day with events that honor the world's nearly 10 million refugees and raise awareness about refugee issues.
Minnesota has become home to approximately 88,500 refugees since 1979. Many were forced to flee their countries and endured long, traumatic journeys to reach safety. The Twin Cities is a primary urban center for refugee populations including Somali, Hmong, Oromo, Liberian, KaRen, Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Russian and many others. As Minnesotans, we can be proud to live in a state that welcomes refugees from around the world and has some of the largest refugee resettlement numbers in the United States and worldwide.
Twin Cities World Refugee Day celebrates the diversity of the cities' many refugee communities while remembering and honoring their journeys to Minnesota. |
